Year in review
December 31, 2008
Feeling much better now that I’ve spent some quality time with good friends. We went out for dinner at a nice Italian place and spent hours chatting about everything. It was really good to catch up with them. Our trip home was in some nice light snow, so it was absolutely perfect. It’s nice to be around friends that you can be completely comfortable with.
Trying to set up meeting with my brother’s family another time before I go.
It just occurred to me that the craziest year of my life so far is coming to a close. Here’s a recap that doesn’t do the year justice:
- Rang in the new year with my study partner, during a study session on a break playing bowling on my Wii.
- Spent the next 5 months studying harder than I’ve ever studied in my life, while juggling getting paperwork done for my big move.
- Pampered myself with massages at the spa (and full day study sessions there, hehe)
- Wrote and passed my crazy board exams.
- Saw One Republic in concert.
- Spent my last month as a resident working the craziest month on wards, horribly understaffed, but feeling very competent.
- Ate at Susur and Rain, both times ordering tasting menus, and wine pairing at Rain. Got autographed menu at Rain.
- Ate lunch at the top of the CN Tower.
- Did a whirlwind last meetings with friends and family while packing up my life.
- Got my first “first-author” original article published!
- Hauled my butt and all my things to a new city/country. Got (mostly) settled.
- Started and completed the most grueling portion of my Master’s degree.
- Got some research put together enough for an abstract and some conclusions!
- Went to a conference… and shopping and wine tasting…
- Started learning a new musical instrument (the guqin).
- Went to a lot of museums! (At least five.)
- Lost my migraine reaction to red wine and chocolate! Enjoyed this loss thoroughly.
- Made new friends! Kept in touch with old ones!
The start to 2009 will be much less intense, and hopefully the year will go much more peacefully and uneventfully. Things I want to get done this year:
- Finish the grueling cousework of my Master’s.
- Get this second manuscript published (finally), maybe work on a third?
- Go to a conference to present my work, hopefully meet with an old friend who now lives there who I have not talked to in ages.
- Go hiking.
- Restart Pilates.
- Settle into a regular exercise routine at the gym and get back into shape.
Hopefully my entire life will get into a more reasonable routine this coming year…
